Japan's Kawasaki Ki-64 fighter
Allied code name: Rob


Takeo Doi designed an unusual fighter in 1939. The Japanese Army wanted a more orthodox design. However, in October 1940 the design was approved to go forward.


The engine selected was the Kawasaki Ha-201 which was two Ha-40 twelve cylinder engines mounted in tandem in front of and behind the cockpit. The forward engine drove the rear fixed pitch propeller. The rear engine drove the front variable pitch propeller.

The engines used the wings for cooling. The front engine used the port wing and the rear engine used the starboard wing.


In December 1943 five test flights were conducted until the rear engine developed a fire in the prototype. Akashi was to repair the engine, but it was never completed before the end of World War II. The airframe was captured at Gifu.

  • Kawasaki Ki-64 KAI: Was proposed to have a Ha-201 engine (2,800 HP). These were two constant speed contra rotating propellers. Maximum speed was thought to be 497 mph / 800 kph. Project cancelled.
