Soviet Union's BA-6 armored cars

Design

The BA-6 armored car was the replacement for the BA-3. The BA-6 was 2,205 lb / 1,000 kg lighter and the suspension was stronger.

The BA-6 body was constructed from riveted and welded construction on a shortened GAZ AAA chassis.

Rear Wheels

A track could be placed over the rear sets of dual wheels which would turn it into a form of half track. This allowed for the BA-6 to have better cross country abilities.

Turret

The BA-6 shared the same turret as the T-26 light tank. A few had the turret of the BT-3. The BA-6 had a periscope in the turret roof for the commander.

Variants

  • BA-6: Developed in 1935.
  • BA-6 Railway Model, BA-6 Sh.d: Had hydraulic jacks mounted in the front and rear that would lift the vehicle so that railway wheels could be installed. The wheels would be installed over the tires. Took 30 minutes to switch wheel modes.
  • BA-6M: Developed in 1936. The engine used was the GAZ M1. Turret was all welded. Only 50 rounds carried. There was a 71-TK-1 radio.
  • BAZ, Amfibyi: Amphibious version. Had a boat shapped hull with two sponsons in front. Propelled in the water by two brass 15" propellars.

Usage

Turkey purchased some of the BA-6s.

Spanish Civil War

The BA-6 was first used in combat during the Spanish Civil War.

Russian-Chinese Border

Many of the BA-6s were stationed on the Russian-Chinese border and used against the Japanese.

By 1945 none were still in service.
