Soviet Union's BA-27 armored car

Design

In 1924 the design of the BA-27 started.

Chassis

The 4x2 F-15 chassis was used.

Engine

Initial models of the BA-27 had difficulties with the engine over heating. There were louvers but when these were closed the engine would overheat. Behind the radiator a large fan was installed which helped some. To fix the engine cooling problems there was an air scoop in front that forced air into the radiator.

Wheels

The rear axle had dual wheels on each side, but these were narrow tires and the BA-27 often bogged down in soft ground.

Prototypes

The first prototypes were completed in 1926.

Production

Starting in 1927 the first production models were completed. Production ended in 1931.

Variants

  • BA-27:
  • BA-27 Model 1927: Crew of four. Fighting compartment was small.
  • BA-27 Model 1928: Main production model. Crew of three. Used Ford-AA chassis. New GAZ four cylinder engine (40 HP). Turret was from the T-18 light tank.
