Japan's Japan's Yokosuka D3Y Myojo (venus) trainer

Design

The Imperial Japanese Navy knew that the Japanese work force didn't have enough skilled workers to manufacture complex aircraft and that alloy materials were in short supply so they wanted to use wood in the production of trainers and transports.

Early Model

In late 1943 the Dai-Ichi Kaigun Koku Gijitsu-sho started work on a wooden version of the D3A2-K. The original wings would have been too complex for unskilled workers so they were made with straight tapered surfaces.

Prototype

The initial D3Y1-K prototypes were found to be too heavy.
