Design

The Imperial Japanese Navy purchased a Douglas DC-4E, after had been rejected by airlines in the United States. It became the basis for the Nakajima G5N Shinzan. The design work on the G5N started in 1939 and the first prototype was ready in 1940.

It was found that the G5N didn't perform very well which was most likely caused by the inexperience of the designer.
