Design

The Aquila was converted from the passenger liner Roma.1 Conversion started in mid-1941.1

Bulges were added to aid in stability and these were filled with concrete to help protect the machinery spaces.1

The catapults and elevators were provided by the Germans.1

Never completed she was taken over by the Germans when the Italians surrendered.1

Damaged during an air raid and by human torpedoes she was eventually scuttled.1
