Design

The Saunders-Roe Lerwick had a slight outwards resemblance to the Short Sunderland.

Armament

The Lerwick had three powered turrets with machine guns.

Prototype

The prototype Lerwick first flew in 1938. It had twin fins and rudders.

Production

Production models had a single fin and rudder.

Usage

The Lerwick had problems with lateral stability throughout its history and as it was severe it couldn't be flown "hands off".

Units

At Oban No. 209 Squadron received the first Saro Lerwicks in December 1939.

The No. 240 Squadron received on Saro Lerwick but it was lost on February 20, 1940.

The No. 4 Operational Training Unit out of Invergordon had some Lerwicks.
